If you haven’t heard, consumer electronics companies are trying to get you to open your wallet just a little farther. Got your HDTV? Check. Blu-ray HD DVD player? Yup. Ok, it’s time for a 3DTV. This emerging technology is obviously being bolstered by the 3D movie phenomenon, but the big question is: will you sit in your living room with a pair of fucked up glasses on? The answer seems to be blowing in the wind, with most folks clueless about what the technology looks like for consumers and what type of programming can be expected as the sets roll out. But if you’re ready to check it out for yourself, the Consumer Electronics Association, ESPN and electronics retailers are banding together this weekend to host special events, promotions and demonstrations to help show how you can enjoy the 3D experience at home. And yes, I said ESPN. So in collaboration with AT&T, Comcast and DIRECTV, the network will bring the following sporting events directly to stores:
On Saturday, 11 September, at 3:40pm, ESPN 3D will feature the live telecast of college football’s defending Big Ten Conference champion No. 3 Ohio State hosting No. 19 Miami of the ACC. Additional ESPN 3D programming will include the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the X Games 16; a 3D replay of college football’s Boise State vs. Virginia Tech; and footage from the Harlem Globetrotters.
Retailers include Best Buy, CompUSA, Fry’s Home Electronics, Sam’s Club, Sears and independent specialty retailers. A complete listing of participating retailers and locations can be found here.
