Bococa, or perhaps BoCoCa, is a New York geographical portmanteau (cf. SoHo, NoHo, NoLIta, etc.) for the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Boerum Hill, Cobble Hill, and Carroll Gardens. The neighborhoods are historically Italian, and until the 1970s comprised a good chunk of what was misleadingly known as South Brooklyn (the area was and is very much in the northwest quadrant of the borough, but was called South Brooklyn because it lies south of downtown Brooklyn).
Today, we think, these neighborhoods comprise an urban paradise for New Yorkers whose wild and single years (often spent in a very strange place called Manhattan) are behind them but who still love New York and want to raise their children here. The area has great schools, funky shops, plenty of parks and playgrounds, and a constantly-changing assortment of restaurants and bars that puts innovative and edgy joints next to cozy hangouts.
All this and more in less than two square miles. An urban paradise indeed — and one that some people, we are told, can even afford.

i suppose this would be an affordable paradise if gentrifiers hadn’t made everyone move out of their homes. and no, it was not a misnomer- the whole area used to be called south brooklyn and/or red hook before gentrifiers of the 1970s called it boerum hill, cobble hill, and carroll gardens, and gentrifiers of the 2000s called it bococa. you should seriously be ashamed of yourselves.
CC – you need to relax. The names might but slightly annoying but ” ashamed of yourselves” – get some perspective.
Born and raised in brookly, red hook, why try to rename like manhattan. There is no place like red hook. Smith st, court st, second street and surrounding areas are red hook. terrible to re name. you shoul be ashamed of your selves. Left second street in 2003 and worst move ever. coming back in 2013. my old stomping grounds for 38 years prior to moving
Just so everyone knows, I didn’t actually have anything to do with renaming the neighborhood. Please folks, I’m not single-handedly gentrifying South Brooklyn. A little perspective with the comments might be in order? We all love it, so let’s be nice, no?
I went to The Polytechnic Institute of Broo ly in the early sixties (some of the letters had fallen off). The commute from LI was over two hours in each direction by bus/subway. Now my grand kids live walking distance in BoCoCa. Wonderful place! Nice of you to do this Tobey, and yes it would be great if people could learn to be nice. Tolerance is also considered a virtue in short supply.
Thanks for this! Much appreciated.
c.cI.know what u mean. I’m born and raised in South Brooklyn, By any other name is still South Brooklyn/Red Hook. Problem is it no longer feels like a neighborhood, with all the influx of nebee and tourist. Its just called progress, I GUESS.
