Immerse Yourself in Atlantic Ave This Weekend (Or-FREE BEER)

By , 19 May, 2011, 1 Comment

Atlantic Ave. is kind of the stepsister of the neighborhood. Overshadowed by busy Smith St. and burgeoning Court St., many don’t see the understated charms Atlantic has to offer. Sure, Barney’s Co-op tends to steal the thunder, but there are other local faves–like Anglophile The ChipShop, newcomer Colonie and Middle Eastern cafe Waterfalls. So why not reacquaint yourself with this happening block and join The Total Atlantic Immersion, this Saturday, 21 May from noon to 6pm. Sponsored by Brooklyn Based and Brooklyn Brewery, you’ll be able to get up to 20 percent off at selected shops and complimentary half pints of Brooklyn Brewery beer at Last Exit, Roebling Inn, The Brazen Head and Waterfront Ale House by picking up a free immersion card, which will be handed out that day starting at 11am at Nunu Chocolates (529 Atlantic Ave. bet. 3rd & 4th Ave.) and at noon at The Brazen Head (228 Atlantic). Some participating stores include Steven Alan, Callalilai, Urban Outfitters, and Jonathan Adler, while restaurants and bars offering specials include Two 8 Two Bar and Burger, Rothschild’s and Sosta.

Montreal Bagel Cafe Coming to Atlantic Ave.

By , 10 February, 2011, 3 Comments

Since the Marius Cafe closed down on Henry and Union a few months ago (for, like, the fifth time) we haven’t found a new home for family, weekend bagel noshing. Hot Bagels on Court is fine, but it doesn’t have a ton of seating and the bagels are a little too doughy for my taste anyhow. So it was with a feeling of great anticipation that I read this sign (left) for Empire Bagels & Bakery Cafe this morning on Atlantic and Clinton (where the old walk-in medical clinic was). So, what can you expect from Empire? The main attraction will be freshly-baked Montreal-style bagels from a wood-fired brick oven on-site. If you haven’t tried the Canadian-run bagels from hot spot deli Mile End, which are also billed as Montreal-style (and actually brought over the border to Brooklyn on an overnight road trip every weekend), you can expect a sweeter, denser bagel that sports a larger hole and a slightly smaller footprint. The new cafe also promises gourmet bread and rolls; fresh-squeezed juices and smoothies; and of course, organic, healthy grub for both breakfast and lunch. Coming soon is as good as it gets right now–no date confirmed.

Barney’s Co-Op Making Inroads

By , 11 August, 2010, No Comment

Yup, I’m REALLY excited for the new Barney’s Co-op. Which is why my heart went pitter patter when I saw workmen on the site yesterday. Don’t know when the doors will open for the public, but my husband may have to hide the credit cards. It’s going to be ugly.

Trader Joe’s Love

By , 29 June, 2010, 1 Comment

I know most of you don’t need a reason to head into Trader Joe’s on Court and Atlantic. The cavernous grocery has won hearts since it opened back in 2008. But last weekend, I threw a baby shower in my garden and after heading to my other true love, Sahadi’s, for chocolate seashells and dark chocolate covered orange rinds, I grabbed some last minute supplies at the Joe’s. I had no extra time to get flowers so I scooped up three bouquets of African roses for $3.99 each. They were small, delicate roses and I’m happy to report, still going strong on my table today (more than I can say for roses I’ve gotten from expensive flower shops in the hood). Secondly, I threw a container of the edamame hummus in my basket for luck. Out of all the things I put out for these ladies to nosh, everyone kept coming back to that–asking what it was and who made it. All in a day’s work on Atlantic Ave.

Pier 6 Almost ready to Rock

Figures. No sooner did I shoot an email to the communications director at The Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy about when Pier 6 would be open to the public, then I saw this in The Brooklyn Paper.

Guests at a sneak preview of Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 6 on Saturday hailed an expansive playground — including a water park, giant sandbox and swings galore — as living up to the hype. The pier will open in June and offer a maze of different play areas for children among trees and tall grass. But later this summer, the real all-ages fun begins: a dog run, three sand volleyball courts, a restaurant with roof access, and even a plant marsh will join the mix.

Though it looks AWESOME, I do worry (hopefully for naught) about how hot those metal slides are going to be. I have no idea exactly what they are made of, but hopefully they thought it all out this time.

Doonan and Adler Plan on Babies and Beards

In a little ode to the new Barneys Brooklyn coming to Atlantic Ave, Creative Director Simon Doonan came to the hood on Sunday with Jonathon Adler (who also has a store at 378 Atlantic Ave.) to do a little scouting. Though he enjoyed his time here and kicked up some ideas, he couldn’t help but do a little stereotyping.

It would be really fun to do something completely bananas with that façade. You know, like Salvador Dalí’s museum in Barcelona, he covered the whole front of it in Spanish bread. Something insane like that, I think they would love that in Brooklyn.” “But,” Adler told us, “it’ll probably just be ironic-facial-hair-and-baby-stroller themed.

That’s ok Simon, we’d take Barneys if it was wrapped in dirty diapers. Just make sure the denim bar is clean and you have enough size 9 shoes!

The Scoop at 139 Atlanic

Stopped by 139 Atlantic yesterday to check out the scene and was impressed with the passion and creativity these guys are putting into their store. The cafe was serving a plethora of coffee drinks and my little one got a cup of frothed milk for his trouble.
The baked goods looked pretty in their case and included a variety of colorful mini cupcakes, muffins with a poached egg on the bottom and hand-rolled boiled bagels.
Tea is also on the menu and as you can see, this gorgeous handmade tea can be brewed for you while you wait. The space is well thought out and child friendly –as are the owners. I also took a walk through the kitchen, which reminded me of something you’d find in a big, old country house. Here’s to hoping these guys stick around and hang with us for a while.

Y Still Doing Afternoon Childwatch-For Now

By , 29 March, 2010, No Comment

Just a gentle reminder that afternoon childwatch is still being implemented at the Dodge YMCA on Atlantic Ave. You can bring your kids until 6pm on Wednesdays, just call 212-912-2440 to let them know you’re coming. It’s raining and a school holiday so may not be a bad time to check it out. The more people come, the better chance we have to keep it going.

Chip Shop Feels Your Pain

By , 10 March, 2010, No Comment

Lots of good, hearty food for $7 is what the ChipShop (reviewed on Bococaland under Eat And Drink) on Atlantic Ave between Henry and Clinton calls the Recession Special. The eatery, which serves British pub grub, is offering fish, chips and a green salad or any shepherd’s pie or mac & cheese dish with peas and a green salad for this low price, Monday through Friday from noon to 4pm. Any money saved on food usually means one thing to us: one more pint.

Landlords Too Greedy on Atlantic Ave?

By , 8 March, 2010, 1 Comment

Are tumbleweeds about to roll down Atlantic Avenue? We’ve already reported that Nova Zembla, the furniture store on Atlantic and Henry, will be closing after 11 years of business. Now we noticed that a long time favorite, Mezcals on Atlantic between Henry and Clinton is also closed for business. According to Lost City , its the usual story–the lease ran out and rent skyrocketed (though you can always visit sister Mezcals at 522 Court in Carroll Gardens). Finally, La Pizzetta, the fairly new pizza joint on Atlantic also between Henry and Clinton, had a sign on it a few weeks ago that mentioned it would be closed until early March, and will open under new management. Walked by today and it didn’t look like it was ready for much. None of this bodes well for this busy stretch of the avenue or for the community in general. What are your thoughts? Hear of any new businesses that might take over the empty storefronts? Let us know.
