PS 29 Wants YOU to Eat Pie and Shop for the Holidays

By , 23 November, 2011, 1 Comment

Come for the pie, stay for the shopping

Sure, there’s other holiday shopping events in the hood. But none come with the same bold promise of pie. That’s why the PS 29 Eat Pie and Shop event has always been one of my faves (even before my son started attending). So mark your calendars now, because it’s coming up on 4 December from 11am to 4pm at the Cobble Hill school (Henry St. between Kane and Baltic).
As mentioned, all types of pie will be available throughout the day–including fruit, creamy, savory and nut. And to make things more exciting, there will also be a pie competition with a panel of judges consisting of celebs like Gail Simmons, an editor at Food & Wine magazine and judge on Bravo fave “Top Chef,” and Danielle Kyrillos, from “Top Chef: Just Desserts,” as well as local restauranteurs like Marc Anthony Bynum, chef at the new MooBurger (fast turning into one of our faves) and Jeff Lederman, of Strong Place, Bocca Lupo and Nectar. The winner will receive a gift package from Food & Wine and bragging rights for the year. Judging will take place at 1pm.
In addition, as a special culinary treat, Danny Meyer’s Shake Shack will also be in attendance, doling out its signature frozen custard (the new storefront will open in Downtown Brooklyn by end of year), and Brooklyn Farmacy & Soda Fountain will be serving its ‘Grumble Grumble’ grilled cheese sandwiches.
Of course, after all that pigging out you simply must do some shopping, so stay for the gift fair overflowing with local artisans, craftspeople and merchants. Kids will be lured away from your efforts with holiday craft workshops hosted by art teachers from Children’s Museum of the Arts and face painting by Mini Max Toys & Cuts. And lastly, if you need the perfect shot for your holiday cards, professional photographers will be on hand for family photo shoots. Proceeds will go to PS 29, but this is the perfect event for anyyone with a sweet tooth and a gift list.

ABC’s Pan Am Pilot Being Filmed in Cobble Hill

By , 1 September, 2011, No Comment

Walking down Clinton St. yesterday with my kids (around Degraw St.), we suddenly came upon the set of ABC’s new period drama, Pan Am. When a nice young man with a headset asked us to stop as they filmed a scene, my son eagerly ogled the classic cars littering the street. At which time, said man with headset smirked and told us how they stalled out in the middle of the street every five minutes. Oh well. The show premiers in the fall starring Christina Ricci and according to the NY Times, the pilot cost $10 million to shoot.

Cobble Hill’s PS 29 Gets a Schoolyard Makeover

By , 11 July, 2011, No Comment

I know this may be old news for many of you, but since I was away last week, it was a nice surprise to see the PS 29 schoolyard looking so shiny and new. With a brand new coat of paint outlining a track and some neat-o games, it was hard to even remember the days of the harrowing playground fire in May (the equipment looked new as well although there’s still some work to do before kids can have a go). A shed was also being set up near the gardens, which looks like a nice touch for our tiny farmers-in-training.

Now That School Is Done: Summer Fun

By , 28 June, 2011, No Comment

A parent’s summer in South Brooklyn means a lot of hot playgrounds, sprinklers and finding some activities to keep the kids busy. So here are just a few things to check out as we head into July. More to come as we get it.

Pop into the New York Transit Museum Thursday afternoons this summer (7 July to 18 Aug) for a trip back in time with a performer on one of the museum’s vintage subway or elevated train cars. Each week a different costumed character brings transit history to life from 1:30 to 2pm.

Beginning 2 July, head to Prospect Park Saturdays at 1pm and 3pm to join one of Macy’s Fishing Clinics. The free program offers kids fishing instruction and an introduction to aquatic ecology, featuring recreational fishing, fishing safety, and fish-friendly techniques. To join in the fun, meet at the Audubon Center at the Boathouse (just inside the Lincoln Road/Ocean Ave. entrance to the Park). And not to worry, all fishing at Prospect Park is “catch and release” only. For more info, all (718) 287-3400, ext. 303.

The summer afternoon acting workshop at Young Actors Workshop will run from 5 to 15 July at Christ Church, Cobble Hill, corner of Clinton and Kane Sts. Variety is the key with a mixture of improv work, theater games, and rehearsal of a play to be determined. Recommended for ages 9 to 13, it goes from 3pm to 5pm and will cost $275.

And tipping their hats to the adults, Char No. 4 at 196 Smith St. is offering a Wed. night special with your choice of a fried oyster or fried shrimp po’boy dressed and served with a bag of Zapp’s and an Abita Resoration Pale Ale for $19 (Starting 6 July). Begins at 6pm and can be ordered at the bar or in the dining area.

Out with that nasty foundation, in with the bronzer. That’s my summer make-up tip. But if you’re ready to switch out your seasonal beauty gear, head over to Shen Beauty (315 Court St.) in Cobble Hill this Thursday for a free makeover from “a top TV and film make up artist.” Spend $85 and you’ll receive a gift from Becca cosmetics and a free blowout from Court Street’s new hair salon, The Bird House. And just to be cheeky, there will be in-store eyebrow threading by Samina (past prices have been $12 for brows and $20 for brows and upper lip). The fun begins at 3pm and the store will stay open until 9pm for you late shoppers.

Immerse Yourself in Atlantic Ave This Weekend (Or-FREE BEER)

By , 19 May, 2011, 1 Comment

Atlantic Ave. is kind of the stepsister of the neighborhood. Overshadowed by busy Smith St. and burgeoning Court St., many don’t see the understated charms Atlantic has to offer. Sure, Barney’s Co-op tends to steal the thunder, but there are other local faves–like Anglophile The ChipShop, newcomer Colonie and Middle Eastern cafe Waterfalls. So why not reacquaint yourself with this happening block and join The Total Atlantic Immersion, this Saturday, 21 May from noon to 6pm. Sponsored by Brooklyn Based and Brooklyn Brewery, you’ll be able to get up to 20 percent off at selected shops and complimentary half pints of Brooklyn Brewery beer at Last Exit, Roebling Inn, The Brazen Head and Waterfront Ale House by picking up a free immersion card, which will be handed out that day starting at 11am at Nunu Chocolates (529 Atlantic Ave. bet. 3rd & 4th Ave.) and at noon at The Brazen Head (228 Atlantic). Some participating stores include Steven Alan, Callalilai, Urban Outfitters, and Jonathan Adler, while restaurants and bars offering specials include Two 8 Two Bar and Burger, Rothschild’s and Sosta.

One Teen Turns Himself in for PS 29 Blaze

By , 18 May, 2011, 1 Comment

Though you might be getting tired of this story, it just keeps surprising us. Soon after a group of teens set fire to PS 29′s new playground equipment early Mother’s Day, their parents decided to pool together a guilt slush fund of $50k to fix the problem. Now we’re learning that one 16 year old boy has actually shown his face and been arrested for the deed. According the Daily News, Max Layton, a Brooklyn private school student and son of film distributor Charles Layton (president of Canadian-based company Alliance Films and has distributed film hits such as “The King’s Speech”), turned himself in to cops early Tuesday.

“I’m absolutely shocked that this happened,” said the boy’s mother, Ursula Alexander, who lives with her son in Cobble Hill. Max Laytan’s lawyer, Sam Gregory, confirmed the arrest. It is unclear what charge or charges the teen is facing. “The first thing these people (the Laytans) wanted to do was to make sure the kids at PS 29 had a new playground,” said Gregory, who added that Ursula Alexander “put together” the group of teens’ parents to collect the $50,000. Sources said four of nine teens involved in the incident attend prestigious St. Ann’s School, where a year’s tuition is about $28,000.

What can I say. I’m not lighting torches and rounding up the towns people–I get it, we all want to protect our children when they do stupid shit. But throwing money at a problem to do it seems more than a little skeevy (and kind of like the movies I watched with boys named Blane and Steff in the 1980s). It’s good to see that this parent had her son face the music. Now how will the other eight react?

Ted & Honey Opening at Brooklyn Navy Yard

By , 12 May, 2011, No Comment

Though website Lost City got our hopes up that local fave Ted & Honey would be moving a second eatery into the much-abandoned Ultimate Burgers and Dogs space on Degraw St., I’m sad to report it’s a no-go. Instead, the Clinton St. cafe will be opening a sibling at the Brooklyn Navy Yard as part of the new exhibition and visitors center (to open sometime in the fall of this year). In addition, they’ll be building a commercial kitchen behind the space to support expanded catering and wholesale businesses.

Brooklyn Farmacy News and Summer Hours

By , 10 May, 2011, No Comment

Amazing what a year can do. Just last spring we were wondering when the newly renovated Brooklyn Farmacy and Soda Fountain would open to the public in Cobble Hill for egg creams, organic ice cream treats and general merriment (helped along by the crew of Discovery Channel’s Construction Intervention). Today, most folks in the neighborhood will tell you what an amazing spot it is to sit, play some Monopoly, grab a sundae and hang with the family. So it was a joy to hear the sweet shop will be open for new warm weather hours as follows: Monday to Thursday: 11am to 10pm, Friday and Saturday: 10am to 11pm and Sundays: 10am to 10pm. In addition, you can help yourself to free wireless AND they’re now serving lunch. The “Grumble Grumble Grilled Cheese” made its debut this month with sharp cheddar cheese and multi-grain bread from Caputo’s Bakery. Served as a special with tomato soup and an egg cream, or solo with a crisp deli pickle from Ric’s Picks you may want to bring your laptop and park it for a while.
