Harvest Fest @ Pier 6

By , 19 October, 2010, 2 Comments

Now that the water park is closed for the season and kids may not be as keen to play in the sand, Pier 6 is making itself relevant in the cooler weather by hosting HARVEST FESTIVAL 2010. Taking place this Saturday, 23 October, 10:30am to 1pm, the park will be transformed into Halloween central, with a Halloween parade, face painting, storytelling, art activities and pumpkin decorating. Kids will also be able to pot their own plants and create Halloween masks. In terms of music, The Deedle Deedle Dees will be taking the stage twice over the course of the event and there will be storytelling in Swing Valley. Moxie Spot will also be on hand with Halloween bags for children to decorate and the Pier 6 dog run volunteers will host a fun activity for your four-legged friends. Here’s the schedule of events:
MUSIC
The Deedle Deedle Dee’s will play two sets: 11:00-11:45 and 12:00-1:00

Another Red Hook Jazz Fest

By , 16 September, 2010, No Comment

Cool down with the weather at the Red Hook Jazz Festival–back for a repeat performance to close out the summer. Happening this Sunday, 19 September in the URBAN MEADOW on President & Van Brunt Streets, Marco Cappelli’s Acoustic Trio is opening the event and you’ll be able to catch other great performances from the likes of the Ben Perowsky Trio and the Dan Loomis Quartet. Suggested donation is $5 for adults–children go free. Looks like the weather will be perfect for an outdoor event, so come on by and chill for a few funky hours.

Free Music Workshop

By , 14 September, 2010, No Comment

Trying to find the right music class for your kids? Come for a free workshop this Sunday from 10 to 11:30am at 117 Remsen St. to get a better understanding of how babies and toddlers process music, and how you can support your child’s musical development. The hour and a half session is presented by Naomi Weinberger of Music Together and Nate Shaw of Brooklyn Music Factory–but this is an adults only affair, so you’ll have to leave the little ones at home this time.

Rosh Hashanah Festivities

By , 8 September, 2010, No Comment

Whether you celebrate the Jewish New Year or just have the days off school, here’s a great way to educate your kids as well as keep them busy for a few hours. Kiddie Korner preschool, at 117 Remsen St, is hosting a free Rosh Hashanah Children’s Program tomorrow (Thursday) at 11am. Two different programs will be available–for 18mo-4yrs (infants invited too) and ages 5-9yrs. Come blow the shofar, listen to stories, dance to the music and gorge on hot dogs (only kosher will do) and slurpies. No need for reservations, just come on by and be part of the fun.

Evening Music Classes This Fall

By , 5 September, 2010, No Comment

Back in March, we reported that Naomi’s Music would be adding a Pajama Class to the itinerary at Kiddie Korner (both my kids go to preschool there and the music classes are part of the program). The class, which takes place in the evening, allows parents who work or have other commitments during the day, to come and enjoy some tunes with their children. Though it was originally hatched as a summer fling, it was successful enough for Naomi to extend it to the school year. You can sign up here for the 6:45pm to 7:30 class (it begins on 7 October and goes until 16 December) or check out the entire schedule here.

Celebrate Brooklyn with Swell Season

By , 30 July, 2010, No Comment

Irish duo Swell Season is bringing its particular brand of soul-tinged rock to Prospect Park tonight at 7:30. You might remember them as the charming, musically-inclined couple in the indie film Once, but either way, their second album, “Strict Joy” has gotten rave reviews. Gates open at The Bandshell (Prospect Park West and 9th Street) at 6:30 so come early and reserve your spot.

Roaring 20′s Hits Governor’s Island

By , 16 July, 2010, No Comment

Again with Governor’s Island. I’m totally digging the vibe over there–especially with the water taxi running all day Friday to Sunday. This weekend should prove to be especially entertaining, with the annual Jazz Age Lawn Party taking place on Colonels Row–period attire encouraged. Music will be provided by Michael Arenella and his Dreamland Orchestra–and you can make it all a little more rousing with Charleston lessons, pie-recipe contests, hat parades and other kitschy extras from the roaring 20′s. Think Gatsby, Daisy, flappers and swing and enjoy cocktails served by St-Germain Elderflower Liqueur and beer provided by Brooklyn Brewery. Picnicking is encouraged though homemade barbecue, sandwiches, salads and more will be for sale. Grab your ticket here for $7 a pop (children under 7 go free). You can also buy them at the door for $10.
